A LITTLE MORE ABOUT IT

Join us for a lecture by Jordan Schnitzer School of Art + Art History + Design's own Alberto McKelligan Hernández, Assistant Professor of Art History, celebrating the publication of his new book, I Want to Dance with You: Resistance, Community, and Solidarity in the Work of Contemporary Mexican Women Artists . Drawing on the work of five contemporary Mexican artists—Gina Arizpe, Melissa García, Nuria Montiel, Brenda Anayatzin Ortiz, and Laura Valencia— I Want to Dance with You explores how art can become a powerful form of resistance, community building, and collective imagination. Focusing on artistic projects created since the early 2000s, McKelligan Hernández examines how these artists respond to the escalating violence of the Mexican drug war, feminicide, state repression, and the pressures of globalization. Using the Red de Feminismos Descoloniales' concept of descolonización, he considers how their work challenges colonial, capitalist, and patriarchal systems while creating spaces for solidarity, care, and new ways of imagining Mexico's future. The lecture will offer insight into the book's central themes, the artists' practices, and the role contemporary art can play in confronting injustice and envisioning more equitable futures. Free and open to the public This event is presented in partnership with PWALS, the Portland Women in Art Lecture Series. Admission: Free
